Is there a way to simplify life in the 21st century? Balance seems unattainable to most of us, but there are a couple of things that you can do.
Welcome to 2019, when we’re all hustling to make our way in the world, to make our mark. Before the advent of the internet and smartphones, people generally worked from 9-5. Obviously, there were the exceptions, but there was no way for you to take your work home with you, and life was simpler, and, in a way, it was easier to keep your work and private life apart. There was balance or rather, more of it.
Unfortunately, times have changed. We now carry our work and friends in our pockets wherever we go, which means that we’re never really off the clock. People are far too used to being able to get hold of anyone 24/7 and there’s a lot less respect for down time. Balance? What balance?
We are consistently overwhelmed by information, which means that we hardly ever have any down time any ways. Being constantly plugged in isn’t healthy and I realised this years ago. I was never well-rested, and I needed to do something about it. But, how exactly do you make sure that you unplug in a digital and ever-connected world so that you recharge, be your best self and have a bit of balance in your life?
There’s a couple of small changes that you can make that have a big impact. Trust me, it will make you feel less anxious and a bit more rested.
Switch off social media notifications on your devices
It’s a huge distraction and once your phone stops pinging all the time, you’ll notice how much time you used to spend on social media. You will have a bit more free time on your hands. Maybe read a book, catch-up on a series, nap, call a friend, go for lunch…do anything you like.
Go smartphone-free after a set time every day
I tend to pay very little attention to my phone after 19h00. After long days spent on devices, meetings and calls, I find that putting my phone aside gives my mind a rest and helps me to recharge for the next day. Same goes for weekends – I neglect my smartphone and social media over weekends. It helps me to be in the moment and digitally detox, so to speak.
Make time to do something that brings you joy
We work so hard that often we lose sight of hobbies. It’s important to make time for something that you love that has nothing to do with your job. It’s not only good for the soul, but it will also spark creativity.
Have a set bedtime
Go to bed around the same time every night if possible. It’s a cliché, but routine helps manage anxiety and stress. A solid night’s sleep can make you feel invincible.
Having a balanced diet ensures a healthy mind and body, which makes it easier to cope with the stress life throws at you. It’s amazing what the right nutrients can do for your stress, energy and anxiety levels.
Move your body
Not everyone loves exercise and gym and that’s okay. But we need to move our bodies in some way or other in order to keep healthy. Ever heard of the saying ‘healthy mind, healthy body’? It’s true. Happy hormones are released, toxins leave your body and your mind is cleared when you exercise. You don’t need expensive equipment for this, a good brisk walk or even a dance around your bedroom to your favourite song once a day will do. Just get your body moving! Remember that energy creates energy.
I promise that if you change just one bad habit that you’ll see a big difference down the line.
